Genesis 4:3-7 NKJV
And in the process of time it came to pass that Cain brought an offering of the fruit of the ground to the LORD. Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat. And the LORD respected Abel and his offering, but He did not respect Cain and his offering. And Cain was very angry, and his countenance fell.
So the LORD said to Cain, "Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen? If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin lies at the door. And its desire is for you, but you should rule over it."
So, this is Moses-speak for 'Cain brought a bad gift to God, while his brother Abel brought a good gift to Him, God liked Abel's gift but didn't like Cain's, so Cain got angry and sad. Then God asked Cain 'Why are you angry and sad? Good deeds are rewarded and if you do bad the sin stays at the door. The bad (sin) wants to rule over you, but you should be able to conquer it'. (Don't quote me on that translation, by the way)
We're going to focus on what God told Cain for today. The NLT has God saying at verse 7 "You will be accepted if you do what is right. But if you refuse to do what is right, then watch out! Sin is crouching at the door, eager to control you. But you must subdue it and be its master.”
We have a choice to do right or wrong. That's our choice. But (this isn't a threat, it's a warning) if we do wrong, sin is waiting for us. Satan is waiting for us. 'Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour' (1 Peter 5:8).
But we can win against sin! It wants to devour and take over us, but we can fight it off with God's strength. Why? Because God said so. Praise God!
